Day 1 - Arusha
On arrival at Kilimanjaro or Arusha Airport you are met by your Peregrine representative, who will drive you to your hotel (approximately 1.5 hours). There will be a trip briefing at the hotel at around 6 pm this evening. The rest of the day will be at your leisure. Please note this is an arrival day and there are no excursions planned, so you may arrive at any time.
Day 2 - Serengeti National Park
Head to Arusha Airport and catch your flight to Kogatende Airstrip. Travel on to the legendary Serengeti. After lunch on arrival, depart on a late afternoon game drive in the 4x4 safari vehicles. Your accommodation is the excellent Sanctuary Serengeti Migration Camp. This camp offers year-round migration viewing, as it continuously follows the famous wildebeest migration as it moves around the park. Generally the camp will be located in the Northern Serengeti from August to November. Each tent has an ensuite bathroom, indoor bucket shower, king size bed, hairdryer, mosquito net and in-room safe. There is also a lounge area perfect for afternoon relaxation, and a lounge bar where pre-dinner drinks are served (including soft drinks, house wines, local brand spirits and beers). Settle in and enjoy your first evening falling asleep to sounds of the African wild.
Day 3 - Serengeti National Park
A typical day involves rising early for some breakfast, either continental or full English. Then it’s time for a morning game drive. Dawn is the ideal time of day for it – it’s not too hot yet and animals spring to activity. The camp should be in the perfect location to catch all the migration action up close. The game drives will be focused on seeing the migration as well many other animals enjoying the greener pastures and the predators that follow. Lunch is enjoyed at camp before an afternoon game drive which is usually at around 4 pm. Depending on wildlife activity, sometimes these morning and afternoon game drives will become a longer day-trip, in which case a packed breakfast and/or picnic lunch will be enjoyed out on safari. Dinner is typically at around 7:30 pm. (Both lunch and dinner are buffet-style with vegetarian options.)
Day 4 - Serengeti National Park
Explore the wide open plains of the Serengeti on further game drives. Green after the rains, brown and burnt in the dry season, the Serengeti is home to thousands of hoofed animals and fierce predators. Flat and rolling, with long grass and acacia trees, these plains get their name from the Maasai word Siringet – 'The place where the land moves on forever'.
Day 5 - Serengeti National Park
Enjoy a final day exploring the park. As well as the key species – lion, rhino, buffalo, elephant, leopard, zebra and wildebeest – look out for the others, such as cheetah, Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelle, topi, eland, waterbuck, hyena, baboon, impala, African wild dog, and giraffe. The park also hosts about 500 bird species, among them ostrich, secretary bird, crowned crane, marabou stork, martial eagle, and lovebirds.
Day 6 - Masai Mara National Reserve
Fly to Masai Mara, using the Kichwa Tembo Airstrip. The Masai Mara Reserve is legendary for its abundance of wildlife, as well as being a stage for the great annual wildebeest migration. Settle into your comfortable accommodation at Sanctuary Olonana. Overlooking the Mara River, you are well located here, and a pod of hippos lives permanently in the river just below camp and many other species come to drink there. As well as a swimming pool and library, there are ensuite facilities with a double vanity and indoor shower. Facilities in all rooms include a room safe, mosquito nets and hairdryer. The main dining room and decking command views over a dramatic stretch of the river. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available. After lunch on arrival take a late afternoon game drive seeking a new migrational herd and the other animals that follow. Each afternoon game drives include sundowner cocktails and canapés at specially selected spots before returning to the camp for dinner. Back at the camp soft drinks, house wines, local brand spirits and beers are included.
Day 7 - Masai Mara National Reserve
Enjoy morning and afternoon game drives in search of wildlife, taking time to stop, watch and photograph the sightings. In between game drives, there is the option of a Masaai Village visit. This gives you insight into the traditional way of life of the Maasai tribe. Learn about the medicinal plants that grow here, the importance of cattle and the stages of life through which all Maasai pass, from young boy or girl to respected elder. Accompanied by an experienced Maasai guide, you are invited to visit the village which is built along traditional lines; complete with cattle enclosure, outer palisade and mud and cow dung huts. Another option today is a nature walk. This is a chance to explore with a local naturalist and learn about plants, trees and insects and their use in the daily lives of the Maasai tribe.
Day 8 - Masai Mara National Reserve
When not out on safari, why not relax in the mini spa and enjoy luxury treatments and healing essences derived from indigenous southern African plants, such as Rooibos, Aloe Ferox, Marula and African Potato). Also, a highly recommended optional activity while here is an early morning hot air balloon ride. Once aloft, you float gently over the plains and the plethora of game. After about one hour the balloon lands and, nearby, breakfast is already being prepared. Enjoy a breakfast of Kenyan fruits, bacon and eggs, and a glass of sparkling wine to toast your flight. Alternatively have the game come to you; relax on the deck overlooking the Mara river where the animals come to drink.
Day 9 - Nairobi
Enjoy a final sunrise game drive to soak up the Masai Mara vistas, then sit down to a leisurely breakfast before departure. Fly from Kichwa Tembo airstrip to Wilson Airport, where you are met and transferred to either a Nairobi city hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Note that it is important not to book onward flights out of Nairobi for any earlier than 6pm.
