Cuba: Infectious Rhythms and Nature’s Paradises

From €4,855 EUR

Description

Trinidad’s old town
Trinidad de Cuba is a small, friendly place with a long history as a centre for sugar cane farming. Its charming coastal setting, lovingly restored facades and gentle pace of life can be experienced in any of the town’s beautiful squares and in the narrow, historic alleyways. This small town has a well-deserved place on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.

The spirited music of Cuba
If Cuba is the birthplace of almost every Latin dance style, then Santiago de Cuba is the stage on which they are performed. Nowhere else will you find so much live music or dancing. In the town’s clubs, bars and dance schools, the rhythms of salsa, son and rumba are omnipresent and just as thrilling as in the world-famous Buena Vista Social Club.

Port Antonio – natural beauty in Jamaica
Known for its reggae, Rastafarians and rum, Jamaica has many magical and serene natural settings to offer alongside its rousing rhythms. Port Antonio in the North East is the spot on the island with the most beautiful scenery. With its perfect beaches, lush tropical vegetation and countless caves, rivers and waterfalls, the area surrounding this small colonial town has been a celebrity hotspot since the 1940s, attracting famous visitors like Errol Flynn and providing the exotic backdrop for a number of films.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Days 1 & 2 - Cienfuegos
Cienfuegos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005, whose name literally translates as "Hundred fires" is also known as the Pearl of the South. The city owes its grand, romantic architecture to the French colonists who first settled there. The beautiful old town of Trinidad de Cuba is a true gem, with lovingly restored colonial facades, sleepy lanes and a turquoise sea. This friendly town, with its important past at the centre of sugar cane cultivation, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for many years, along with the cultivated landscape of the Valle de Los Ingenios, or "Valley of the Sugarmills".
Day 2 - Day 3 - At Sea

Day 3 - Day 4 - Isla de la Juventud
The "Isle of Youth" is the largest of Cuba's lesser islands. It was a refuge for notorious privateers like Sir Francis Drake and Henry Morgan, and is said to have been the inspiration behind Robert Louis Stevenson's famous novel, "Treasure Island". Nowadays you can treat yourself to some sun here and let the Caribbean waves wash round you. The beaches are almost untouched and are still a well-kept secret. The treasures in the sea around the island were designated as a nature and marine reserve in 1980.
Day 4 - Days 5 & 6 - At Sea

Day 5 - Day 7 - Santiago de Cuba
The El Morro fortress towers high above the bay. It was almost completely destroyed by the pirate Henry Morgan but just 20 years later was once again strong enough to withstand any attack. Santiago de Cuba, an architectural gem, is proud not only of its reputation as the birthplace of the revolution, but also of its musicality. If you go for a walk, sooner or later you will find yourself in an authentic Salsa bar. The whole city has music in its blood, and nowhere else do people make so much music or dance so much. The rhythms of the Salsa, Son and Rumba are just as thrilling in clubs, bars and schools as they are in the famous Buena Vista Social Club.
Day 6 - Days 8 & 9 - Port Antonio
Port Antonio was once the world's banana capital, but for a long time now international VIPs have discovered this town for themselves. Some properties can be found near the clear deep waters of the Blue Lagoon. The pretty little town, surrounded by sugar cane fields and banana plantations, impresses particularly with its delightful beaches. The Rio Grande is the island's largest river and channels its course over 60 kilometres (37 miles) in green solitude through the jungle and into the sea. Historically, bananas and other fruit were carefully transported on bamboo rafts along the waterway to the port. Nowadays the rafts have been equipped with bench seats and are used for excursions.
Day 7 - Days 10 & 11 - Montego Bay
In north-western Jamaica, on the mouth of the Montego River, lies "Mo' Bay". The beach resorts of Doctor's Cave and White Sands have been popular holiday destinations for wealthy Americans since the 1900s. The main attractions are the beaches with their fine white sand and turquoise sea. A colourful coral reef with its fascinating underwater world stretches out along the shore line, and inland is the island's most beautiful golf course. Some magnificent mansions bear witness to the wealth and high life enjoyed by the plantation owners, since the town was one of the largest places for shipping sugar cane in the 18th century.
