Beginning in the historic Sichuan Province, your journey will take you through all of the breathtaking sites this beautiful region has to offer. Learn to cook traditional Sichuan cuisine in your very own private cooking class, gain an insight into local pastimes such as Tai Chi and Chinese calligraphy and visit the rescued moon bears in local sanctuaries and with China’s national treasure—the Giant Panda. You’ll witness diverse landscapes, filled with lush bamboo forests, ancient towns and winding rivers– a truly memorable site for nature lovers.

Your journey continues with a three night cruise along the majestic Yangtze River. Departing from Chongqing you will travel along one of the most picturesque sections of the river, through the renowned Three Gorges. You finish your tour in the historic city of Guangzhou, where you will experience the wonderful culture and unique architecture that this lovely city has to offer.


Tuesday 29 August
Adelaide to Chengdu

Today you will depart Adelaide with China Southern bound for Chengdu via Guangzhou. On arrival this evening in Chengdu, you will be met and transferred to your hotel.

Wednesday 30 August

Immerse yourself in Chengdu’s laid-back lifestyle on this late morning walking tour and get an insight into local traditions and pastimes, from Chinese calligraphy to Tai Chi. Admire city landmarks such as the Sichuan Art Gallery and Tianfu Square, browse the shops along Kuan-Zhai Lane and take a stroll through tranquil People’s Park.

In the afternoon, travel to the Sichuan Cuisine Museum to commence your private cooking class. As a national AAA level scenic spot lying in the ancient town of Pixian county in Chengdu and covering about 27,000 square meters, it is the only dynamic museum in the world displaying the Sichuan Culinary Culture. It displays the important parts of Sichuan local culture including cuisine, wine, opera, tea, architecture and gardens, making the museum unique and distinctive from others. Have some time to walk around the museum before learning to cook some authentic Chinese dishes with an experienced chef. After cooking up a storm in the kitchen, sit down to feast upon the fruits of your labour.

Thursday 31 August

Late this morning take a short drive to visit the Giant Panda Research Base located just 10km away from downtown Chengdu. The Chengdu Panda Breeding Research Centre has been created to imitate the pandas’ natural habitat giving the pandas the best possible environment for breeding and rearing their young. The Centre covers an area of 92 acres, the majority of which is set aside for Giant Pandas.

The Centre also cares for over 20 species of rare and endangered wild animals as well as lesser pandas, black-necked cranes and white storks. Bamboo, bright flowers, fresh air and a natural landscape all add to the beauty of the centre.

The afternoon is yours at leisure to further explore the charming city of Chengdu.

Friday 1 September
Moon Bear Sanctuary / Zigong

This morning visit the Moon Bear Sanctuary founded by the Animals Asia Foundation. The Moon Bear Sanctuary works hard to end the suffering of captured wild Moon Bears. Entry to the Sanctuary is subject to management approval.

Later today, continue by road to Zigong to visit the Dinosaur Museum. Zigong is located to the south of the Sichuan Basin. The Zigong Dinosaur Museum is built in Dashanpu to the northeast of Zigong City. Located about 11 kilometres from downtown Zigong and having an area of 0.25 hectares, the Museum was open to the public in 1987. It is China’s first dinosaur museum and claims to have the largest collection of dinosaur fossils exhibits in the world. It is here where more than 160 sites of dinosaur fossils have been discovered, including several dozen sites of complete dinosaur skeletons. A large number of dinosaur footprints have also been found. It is no wonder Zigong has been given the title “Home of the Dinosaur”.

Saturday 2 September

This morning you will depart for a day trip to the Shunan Bamboo Forest. Located in South Sichuan, the Shunan Bamboo Forest is a green paradise with most of the area covered by 58 species of bamboo. Scenes of the famed Chinese movie “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and the first scene shown at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games were shot here.

There are eight main scenic areas and two subordinate scenic areas in the Shunan Bamboo Forest, incorporating themes of magnificence, peril, peacefulness, steepness and elegance. Today you will visit The Sea of Bamboo area and enjoy a hike through the park. A picnic or restaurant lunch will also be provided.

Sunday 3 September
Leshan/ Emei Shan

This morning you will drive to Leshan. Leshan city (or Happy Mountain city) is the home of the Giant Buddha at the junction of the Min, Dadu and Qingyi rivers. The Giant Buddha, was carved out of a cliff face more than a thousand years ago and qualifies as the largest Buddha in a sitting posture in the world, towering 71 metres high. The Buddha is so large that you could have a picnic on the nail of his big toe!

This afternoon continue to your accommodation at the foot of Mt. Emei, one of China’s four sacred Buddhist mountains. The first Buddhist temple in China was built on the summit of Mount Emei making this area of great spiritual and cultural importance.

Monday 4 September
Emei Shan

After breakfast visit Emei Mountain and take a cable car to the Golden Summit which is more than 10,000 feet above sea level. The mountain itself is shrouded in the ever-hanging cloud fog, lofty crags, cloud-kissing precipices, butterflies and azaleas. Fir trees, pines and cedars trees clothe the slopes.

The afternoon is yours at leisure.

Tuesday 5 September
Emei Shan/ Shangli/ Dujiangyan

Leave early this morning and head to Shangli Ancient Town located on the north side of Ya’an City. It is an important station on the southern Silk Road, China’s oldest international highway over 2000 years old. In the famous ancient town, residential buildings of the Ming and Qing dynasties are well preserved, including the ancient bridges, pagodas and memorial archways.

Enjoy a local lunch before continuing by road on to Dujiangyan.

Wednesday 6 September
Dujiangyan/ Taoping/ Maoxian

It is an early morning rise today starting with a visit to the China Conservation and Research Centre for the Giant Pandas located in the Qingcheng town. The Centre specialises in panda rescue and disease prevention. The Dujiangyan base includes a panda hospital, a medical lab, 10 sets of monitoring enclosures, 30 sets of enclosures, a panda kitchen, an educational centre and staff housing. The panda rescue and quarantine area focuses on pandas rescued from the wild who are sick or injured so they can receive medical care and rehabilitation.  It also places a major focus on senior and disabled pandas. Essentially, it serves as a panda “nursing home” where they are able to receive special care. The panda disease control, prevention and research area focuses on diseases that affect the giant pandas and how they can be prevented. The base has a large state of the art laboratory for research where Chinese scientists work side by side with researchers and scientists from around the world. They work together to study panda behaviours and health, sharing information and research.

A further two hour drive will take you to the Qiang Village of Taoping. Referred to by specialists and scholars as the mysterious “Ancient Fortress of the East”, the village was initially built in 111 BC, covering more than 2000 years of history. See the sight of blockhouses and the unique architecture of the Qiang ethnic group. Today, there remains nearly 100 households of Qiang people who still maintain their simple and primitive Qiang ethnic lifestyle.

Continue by road on to Maoxian. This town is home to the country’s largest population of Qiang, the mountain-dwelling ethnic group who were severely affected by the earthquake of 2008.

Thursday 7 September
Maoxian/ Songpan/ Huanglong

This morning visit Songpan Old Town to see the well-preserved old City Wall and its ancient architecture. Songpan, a famous historical city in the Sichuan Province, is located within the territory of Aba Tibetan and Qiang Ethnic Nationalities Prefecture. It is a historically famous and strategically important township. Because of its location, there are four ethnic groups that reside in the town –TibetanQiangHui and Han. This contributes to the unique cultural style of Kangba Culture, a kind of multi-cultural melding of the four different cultural elements.

This afternoon you will drive to Huanglong for the night.

Friday 8 September
Huanglong National Park/ Jiuzhaigou

This morning visit the Huanglong (Yellow Dragon) Scenic and Historic Area. Located in the Songpan County in the northwest part of Sichuan Province, the area encompasses  the Huanglong and Muni Valleys. The Huanglong Valley comprises of snow-clad peaks and the easternmost glacier in China. Due to its layered calcium carbonated deposit patterns, the valley resembles a golden dragon winding its way through the virgin forest, stone mountains and glaciers. Along the valley numerous colourful ponds of different sizes and shapes are scattered throughout. The ponds are strewn with gold coloured limestone deposits giving a shimmering golden hue to the water making it seem as if a golden dragon is surging forth from the forest. It was therefore named ‘Huanglong Valley’ (Yellow Dragon Valley). Enjoy a gentle hike through the park before
transferring to Jiuzhaigou—your home for the next two nights.

Jiuzhaigou National Park

Today you will have a full day to explore the Jiuzhaigou National Park.

An astonishingly beautiful park, Jiuzhaigou has been listed for protection by the World Natural Heritage Society. The scenery varies with the distinctive seasons. Jiuzhaigou is the water source of the Jialing River, a tributary of the Yangtze River. The valley is a Y shape embraced by green mountains with an abundance of natural wonders that combine to create a heavenly landscape. Immerse yourself in the beauty with visits to the Shuzheng Lake, Zechawa Visage, and Rize Gully.

Sunday 10 September
Yangtze River Cruise

Have a restful morning before your late morning transfer to the Jiuzhaigou Airport where you will board your flight to Chongqing.

On arrival in Chongqing transfer to the port to board the Century Sky where you will spend the next three nights cruising along the Yangtze River.

You will cruise down the 6,300 kilometre Yangtze River, the world’s third longest waterway, deep into the heart of the province of Qinghai, to the north of Tibet, and flows relentlessly eastwards until it empties into the East China Sea near Shanghai.

Monday 11 September
Yangtze River Cruise

This morning visit Fengdu Ghost City. Here there is a strong belief in the afterlife with folklore stating that this city is home to devils. Chinese people believe this place is where spirits of the dead come to rest. However, along with the dark side, Fengdu is one of the most beautiful areas in China. It is a city rich in culture and boasts a variety of historic relics.

Later in the afternoon enjoy a shore excursion to Shibao Pagoda. The spectacular 12-storey wooden pagoda was built into the hill with overhanging eaves and stands 56 meters high. It is said that the higher you climb up the Shibaozhai pagoda stairs, the better your wish or prayer will be answered. Reaching the top of the pagoda also offers commanding views of the Yangtze River.

This evening you will be entertained by cabaret and the Captain’s Welcome Dinner.

Tuesday 12 September
Yangtze River Cruise

This morning enjoy a visit the White Emperor City at Fengjie County. The city sits on top of Baidi Hill surrounded by water on three sides, and by mountains on the left side. It is an extremely beautiful city, home to many temples and gates. There are nearly 1000 steps to reach the top of the mountain where you will be spoilt by the magnificent view of the majestic Kui Gate (the western tip of Qutang Gorge).

Later you will pass through the Qutang Gorge and the Wu Gorge before taking an excursion by rowboat through the Dam ship locks. (subject to river conditions and authority permission)

Wednesday 13 September

This morning tour the Three Gorges Dam before arriving in Yichang. At over two kilometres in length, the dam is the world’s largest hydroelectric power station in terms of capacity and energy generation. Although controversial, it is hard not to be impressed by the sheer scale of the massive feat of engineering.

After disembarking from the cruise around midday, enjoy an afternoon guided tour of Yichang if time permits.

Transfer to the Yichang Airport for your evening flight to Guangzhou.

Upon arrival in Guangzhou you will be transferred to your hotel.

Thursday 14 September

This morning is yours at leisure.

Early this afternoon enjoy a guided city tour of Guangzhou. Visit the Museum of the Mausoleum of the Nanyue King. Considered one of the best museums in China, it houses the contents of the royal tombs of the Nanyue-ruler Zhao Mo. The tomb was discovered in 1983 when a bulldozing crew digging up a basement for a hotel uncovered the ancient mausoleum. The next stop is Yuexiu Park, the most scenic park in Guangzhou. It acts as a natural defence in the northern part of the Guangzhou city together with Bai Yun Mountain. The last stop is Huacheng Square, the buzzing centerpiece of Zhujiang New Town, and the heart of the modern city. Continue along the Pearl riverfront, stopping to admire striking landmarks such as the Canton Tower, Guangdong Museum and the futuristic Guangzhou Opera House, an architectural masterpiece by Zaha Hadid.

End the day with a Cantonese dinner at a local restaurant.

Friday 15 September

This morning continue to tour other areas of Guangzhou on your guided tour.

Visit the Chen Family Temple, an ancestral temple of the Chen families in Guangdong Province. Built in 1890-1894, covering a ground space of 15,000 square metres, the temple is built in the traditional Chinese architectural style. It is laid out in a symmetrical way, with the longitudinal central line as the axis and the structures on one side corresponding exactly with those on the other.

The next stop is the Six Banyan Temple, which is a 1400-year- old Buddhist Monastery with the Six Banyan Pagoda and kinds of temples.

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before visiting Shamian Island, the heart of Guangzhou’s former European concession. France and England both set up shop on this sandy river island in 1859 toward the end of the Opium Wars. Shamian Island is home to a number of colonial-era buildings, including a restored French Catholic Church, Our Lady of Lourdes; its British Protestant complement, the Christ Church Shamian; and many former hotels, embassies, trading houses and residences. The island (actually a permanent sandbank in the Pearl River) makes for a pleasant stroll with its’ gardens, tree-lined streets, restaurants, cafes and tea houses.

The tour ends with a stop at Qingping Market for some last minute shopping.

This evening enjoy a dinner cruise on the Pearl River.

Saturday 16 September

Your last day in China is yours at leisure. You may like to visit the Chimelong Safari and Adventure Park or you may just like to relax in one of the lovely parks that Guangzhou has to offer.
