On this expansive voyage, travel within the legendary Ring of Fire, home to 75% of Earth’s volcanoes—and some of the most breathtaking scenery imaginable. Sail down Russia’s rugged coastlines, through the remote Kuril Islands, all the way to Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island. Along the way observe a myriad of wildlife from brown bears and walrus to rare birdlife like the endangered red-crowned crane and the largest living owl species. Hike through fairytale forests, encounter once-forgotten ancient cultures, and get an up-close geology lesson as you Zodiac into a water-filled caldera. As always flexibility is the hallmark of our expeditions and the day-by-day itinerary may change as we take advantage of rare wildlife sightings or a chance to linger ashore for golden hour photo ops.

A host of advanced design features and technology ensures sustainable marine environmental practices. National Geographic Orion accommodates 102 guests in 53 cabins, including several with balconies. She is spacious and modern, with a variety of public rooms that offer panoramic views of the passing landscape. Friendly and informal, Orion fosters a welcoming atmosphere where like-minded guests share in exceptional experiences and enrichment. Her public rooms include a dramatic window-lined main lounge, as well as an observation lounge and library perched at the very top of the ship, with plentiful observation decks. The spacious lounge is the heart of our expedition community, and is suited for spirited cocktail hours, informative presentations and our nightly tradition of Recap. In addition, a dedicated theater provides a unique setting for specialist presentations or films and slideshows. Both the main dining room and outside buffet easily accommodate all guests at once for open seating dining. On selected nights, weather permitting, our dining room menu is also available on the outside deck. While Orion interiors are elegant, life aboard is always casual, with no need for formal clothing. And you’ll find shipboard services like laundry, in-room cabled internet, and public-area wifi.

Day 1 - Days 1 - 25: Nome to Tokyo - Along the Ring of Fire
Discover the wild, northeastern most reaches of the Asian continent on an epic journey through one of the most geologically active regions of our planet. Set sail from Alaska aboard the National Geographic Orion, crossing the fabled Bering Strait to explore the unspoiled shores of Russia’s Chukotka and Kamchatka peninsulas. Navigate the Commander Islands, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve harboring fascinating wildlife of both Asian and North American origin, and continue south to the remote Kuril Archipelago, a pristine wonderland of volcanic geology, indigenous cultural sites, and diverse flora and fauna. Hike amid the enchanting lakes and forests of northern Japan’s national parks, and cap off your voyage in the thriving metropolis of Tokyo.
