The Green Coast of Brazil

From £2,282 GBP

Description

This is a tropical sun-soaked journey that lets you combine excursions into the Amazon rainforest and visits to tropical beaches with the experience of bustling city life. We set sail from Uruguay’s capital city, Montevideo and travel north along the coastline of Brazil to the sprawling city of Fortaleza.

Tropical paradise and total relaxation
Our first stop is Rio Grande do Sul. Brazil’s southernmost state is not only a paradise for bird lovers, with the forest-covered canyons of its national parks and cascading river valleys, it is also the most culturally distinct. Experiencing the ‘cowboy culture’ of the region’s gaúchos (cattle herders) is the perfect way to start your Brazilian adventure. Then, take the opportunity to venture into the rainforest to see amazing plant and bird-life, and bathe in crystal-clear streams in Paranagua. In the coastal paradise town of Paraty, you will have time to relax on white beaches, go windsurfing and diving, or learn more about ecology in the Atlantic forest. Two days at sea is followed by a visit to Ilhéus, where you can visit cacao plantations or enjoy a birdwatching excursion.

Stimulate Your Senses
Salvador will stimulate your senses: Churches with gold-encrusted panels, the exotic and inviting scent and taste of the African-influenced food and the shouts of street vendors, all to the tune of roaring traffic and the distinctive music of Bahia.

Day 6 - Day 6 - Tracing the Gold Trail
The UNESCO World Heritage town of Paraty is remarkably beautiful. The town, with its old colonial houses and cobblestone streets, is surrounded by islands, sheltered beaches, and a backdrop of steep, jungled mountains. Paraty had its first boom during the gold rush in Brazil, in the 17th century. It was the final point of the 'Gold Trail'. Originally used by the Guaianazes Indians, the 745-mile road connected the gold mines with the Atlantic Ocean through the rough terrain of the rainforest. At the beginning of the 19th century, Paraty became renowned once again due to the coffee trade and the production of Cachaça, a distilled spirit made from sugarcane juice. The coastline, with its intact forests, attracts hikers, botanists and ornithologists from all over the world and a visit here is an unforgettable one.
Day 7 - Days 7 - 8 - Up the coast
Perhaps you start your day a bit later and take your time enjoying a longer breakfast. With two days at sea, it is the perfect time for birdwatching from the deck, attending fascinating lectures or simply relaxing with a good book. Day 8 - Day 9 - Creating extraordinary memories
We arrive in the relaxed town of Ilhéus, which offers many attractions including a botanical garden, several museums and churches, a sloth sanctuary, old sugar mills, cocoa plantations and 15 superb beaches. Join a bird-watching excursion, visit one of the many cacao plantations, take a guided tour around the town, enjoy snorkelling, or spend the day relaxing on a sandy beach.
Day 9 - Day 10 - African influences
Salvador is said to be a treat for your senses with its churches boasting gold-encrusted panels, the exotic and inviting scent and taste of the African-influenced food, and the sounds of the street vendors selling their wares to the background tune of roaring traffic and distinctive Bahian music. The city is divided into upper and lower towns connected by an art deco elevator (Elevador Lacerda). The marketplace at the bottom of Elevador Lacerda is well known for its local art. The historic centre of Salvador, 'The Pelourinho', was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 and is a famous example of the impressive Portuguese colonial architecture. The city also has an amazing amount of churches. Salvador was a significant centre for the Atlantic slave trade between the 16th and 18th century. Today, nearly 80% of the city's inhabitants have African roots and the influence of African culture can be seen in the city's music and cuisine.

The old centre has several historical buildings, churches and cathedrals to visit. We offer an excursion to the remarkable city of Olinda, which was founded by the Portuguese in the 16 century and was rebuilt in the 18 century after it was looted by the Dutch. This UNESCO World Heritage Site features old houses, and more than 20 baroque churches, convents and smaller chapels that will leave a lasting impression.
