How does gliding through a dreamy, fairytale landscape of karst limestone spires, mysterious caves, ancient rock paintings, and endless secret coves filled with corals and fish of every colour sound?
Or swimming with whale sharks at a local fisherman’s ‘bagan’ platform at dawn, as they come to feed on the many small baitfish that the fishermen catch and share with the sharks as an example of humans and animals living in harmony. If you are lucky, there will be schools of dolphins and flights of diving seabirds to add to the excitement.
How about floating in body-temperature water, watching endless species of fish swim below over the backdrop of kaleidoscope corals, or rolling over and floating on your back when you hear the screech of a sulphur-crested cockatoo flying past, highlighted against the backdrop of a lush green landscape?
Maybe the otherworldly experience of drifting among masses of rare stingless jellyfish in an actual forest pool of evolution?

Overview
Vessel Type: Yacht Length overall: 38 metres Passanger Capacity: 14 Led by Captain Ferdi and operated by a crew of 12, the 38-metre Katharina sits low in the water, making her a most beautiful looking boat. Built in 1995 in Kalimantan, her slim hull was originally planned for use as a commercial freighter before she caught our eye with her simple lines and sleek structure. After her 2014 interior refit, her transformation is a conservation exercise back to authenticity of a mighty seafaring tradition. Not only is the Katharina very elegant on the water, she is also fast becoming a classic yacht, as very few of these original designs remain. Accommodating just 12 guests in six cabins, with a salon & bar, two sun decks, and an outdoor dining area, she offers a more intimate experience.

Itinerary



Day 1 - Day 1 & 2
Take an early morning trek in the jungle to see the Red Bird of Paradise and the Wilson’s Bird of Paradise in their jungle home as they perform their mating rituals in the trees and on the forest floor.Visit small islands for some fantastic snorkelling and beach time, swimming, paddling, and kayaking. We will explore the jungle-clad coastline by dinghy, enjoying the scenery and looking for birds before enjoying cocktails on the upper deck, waiting for the hornbills flying back to their roosting trees.
Day 2 - Day 3 & 4
Visit a locally initiated programme where the villagers are replanting mangroves in their coastal areas to prevent erosion and to provide safe environments for juvenile fish to thrive. We will get our hands on and plant a few of them for ourselves, and hear from the founder of the project.Snorkel on a nearby reef and visit the traditional village of Marandanweser, where the locals will perform some traditional songs and dance for us. Bring your dancing shoes because you will be invited to join in.Trek to a viewpoint high above an aquamarine lagoon that overlooks a picturesque limestone karst chain of islands.
Day 3 - Day 5 & 6
Enjoy more relaxing time snorkelling on the reefs, exploring the inlets and local areas by paddle board and kayak, or swimming and sunbathing from the white sand beaches of this beautiful piece of paradise.Visit the Pisang Islands, a small group of picture-perfect islands, where we will spend the morning exploring the beaches, crystal clear waters, and vibrant reefs with our snorkels.On the mainland of Papua, where we will visit a local village and meet the residents, who will welcome us into their village, sharing with us their way of life, which consists of fishing and growing nutmeg.
Day 4 - Day 7 & 8
We have the chance to swim with wild dolphins and also enjoy some spectacular snorkelling and beach time on a remote white-sand beach.Experience a most serene and primal scene of a jungle waterfall, where a roaring river surrounded by virgin rainforest pours into the sea. Here we will swim and play in the waterfall and the sea as we take in this most tranquil tropical scenery.
Day 5 - Day 9 & 10
Triton Bay is a place of unsurpassed natural splendour, where time and tides have sliced the limestone landscape into tall cliffs and numerous islands separated by lagoons and narrow channels. Heading through the Namatote Passage, we will see an impressive collection of ancient cave paintings high up on the cliffs.It is also home to fishermen who collect baitfish and keep them in nets attached to specially built platforms, also known as ‘bagans’. It is these and their fish that attract whale sharks. We will head out in the tenders in the early morning light to see if the sharks are around, and if we are lucky, we will spend a couple of hours in the water with these magnificent creatures.Take a short walk into the forest to see a most spectacular jungle waterfall surrounded by virgin rainforest, and take a dip in its cool refreshing waters.
Day 6 - Please Note:
Our mission is to provide the best experience possible for our guests, given the current conditions, and when unexpected opportunities for adventure may present themselves along our cruise routes. Sometimes, weather conditions, tides, or other local factors dictate that we need to vary from the published route, and at times, there are special opportunities to explore and discover new locations, events, and activities. These explorations will always be a definite enhancement to the published itinerary and will be undertaken after discussion and agreement among guests. Ultimately, the boat captains and your tour leader will make decisions to maximize trip safety and your overall enjoyment, so please come prepared to be flexible!
Day 7 - D A Y 7
- We wake up off the coast of Papua to a most serene and primal scene of a jungle waterfall where a roaring river surrounded by virgin rainforest pours into the sea. - Here we will swim and play in the waterfall and the sea as we take in this most tranquil tropical scenery.We will also have the chance to snorkel through the corals on a nearby reef. - Later in the day we will continue our journey east, stopping off late afternoon for another swim and snorkel on our way to see the whale sharks of Triton Bay.
Day 8 - D A Y 8
- Triton Bay is a place of unsurpassed natural splendour, where time and tides have sliced the limestone landscape into tall cliffs and numerous islands separated by lagoons and narrow channels. It is also home to fishermen who collect baitfish and keep them in nets attached to specially built platforms, also known as ‘bagans’. It is these and their fish that attract whale sharks. - We will head out in the tenders to see if the sharks are around, and if we are lucky, we will spend a couple of hours in the water with these magnificent creatures. - After lunch we will explore the bays and limestone outcrops aby tender, kayak, and paddle board as well as swim and snorkel from the beautiful white-sand beaches. - This evening we will have a beach BBQ with the crew, with singing and dancing late into the night.
Day 9 - D A Y 9
- We will spend the morning cruising through the undisturbed coves, caves, and lagoons before heading north through the Namatote Passage, where there is an impressive collection of ancient cave paintings high up on the cliffs. - The afternoon will be filled with more snorkelling, swimming, kayaking and paddling as we relax amidst the beauty of the surrounding jungle covered islands. - We will spend our final evening on the ship resting at anchor and enjoying a farewell dinner with our captain and crew.
Day 10 - D A Y 1 0
- In the morning, we will find ourselves at anchor in the harbour of Kaimana, and after an early breakfast our tenders will take you ashore for your transfer to the airport for your onward travel.

    • Our tour leaders are a wealth of information on the regions we visit and will prepare you for each activity with on board talks and presentations to give you a greater understanding of the different experiences you will have each day. They will also act as your cross-cultural bridges to all the people we meet along the way, so feel free to ask them to translate when talking to local Indonesian people on your travels.
