And as if this were not exciting enough, there it suddenly lies before you: the Panama Canal, a legendary structure full of history and tales to tell. Opened more than 100 years ago, over 80 km (49 mi.) long and one of the world’s most important straits of water, the canal has and is undergoing significant expansion to accommodate ever larger container ships.

Day 10 - Days 11 & 12: Peru (Salaverry, cruising off the Islas Guanape and Islas Grupo de Huaura)
Millennia-old relics in PERUThe propeller of the HANSEATIC seems to turn back time and revive ancient civilisations – such as the impressive legacy of the Chimu near Salaverry: explore the Huaca el Dragon temple and Chan Chan*, the continent’s most important archaeological site. The UNESCO World Heritage Site, built around 1300, is probably one of the largest adobe cities in the world. Marvel at the former settlement of the Mochica culture, around 2,000 years old, and the ruins of important Chimu shrines in the Moche Valley and the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon*. Two imposing structures: one made from millions of adobe bricks, the other decorated with colourful paintings and friezes. Imagine people praying here for the favour of the gods. The Islas Guanape were created by nature – and appear on a HANSEATIC route for the first time. Their rugged cliffs are populated by gannets, Inca terns and pelicans. The islands are also home to sea lions and Humboldt penguins. Your thirst for discovery will be inspired both here and off the Islas Grupo de Huaura. Both archipelagos are remote conservation areas, which means your visits are subject to official approval and must respect their sensitive nature – in keeping with our environmental philosophy.
